Q
Is it possible to cover my old Artex with a smooth plaster finish ?.
A
There is no simple answer to this question as it depends a lot on the Artex, it’s application, composition and the base material it has been applied too.
If the depth of the pattern is shallow it may be possible to over skim, or if the Artex is soft, it may be possible to scrape down to point where and plaster skim can then be applied directly on top.
If the pattern is deep or the base material either wall or ceiling is damaged, plaster boarding over the top or floating with backing plaster first and then applying a plaster skim finish may be the best option.
All in all it is better to have it looked at before, so there are no surprises.
